The Five Mindfulness Trainings are based on the precepts developed during the time of the Buddha to be the foundation of practice for the entire lay practice community. Thich Nhat Hanh has translated these precepts for modern times, because mindfulness is at the foundation of each one of them.

Thich Nhat Hanh (Thay) has written many books that you may find helpful to your practice, some of which are also available on tape or CD. Four books by or about Thay that are especially recommended for those new to this tradition are:

Also, the River Oak Sangha has donated a number of books on mindfulness practice and Buddhism to the Redding Public Library as well as subscriptions to two Buddhist magazines: Tricycle and Shambhala Sun. Check them out.
Recitations
Many of the following recitations are includied in the Plum Village Chanting and Recitation Book and its revised edition titled Chanting from the Heart: Buddhist Ceremonies and Daily Practices. Both editions were compiled by Thich Nhat Hanh and the Monks and Nuns of Plum Village and both editions are available from amazon.com and other booksellers.
